The US Air Force's Next Generation Air Dominance program, known informally as the F-47, conducted its first public demonstration flight over Edwards Air Force Base in California on Friday. The aircraft, designed to replace the aging F-22 Raptor, is the most expensive fighter aircraft ever built.
Program Background
NGAD has been in development under classified status since 2015. The Air Force confirmed the program's existence in 2020 and acknowledged a prototype had flown. Friday's demonstration marked the first time the aircraft was shown to the public in flight.
Capabilities
While most specifications remain classified, the Air Force confirmed the aircraft incorporates sixth-generation technologies including advanced radar-absorbent materials, directed energy weapons integration, and AI-assisted pilot decision support.
Cost and Procurement
The Air Force has requested $11 billion in the FY2027 defense budget for initial NGAD procurement. Unit cost is estimated at $300 million per aircraft, compared to $150 million for an F-35.
